Young driver safety was the focus of an important roundtable in the House of Commons yesterday, bringing together motor insurers to discuss how we can reduce the disproportionate number of crashes caused by young drivers.
Insurers are on the frontline of young driver risk every day, so it was invaluable to see them at the heart of the discussion. They understand behaviour, claims trends, pricing pressures and the realities facing new drivers.
Their insight, data and influence will be vital as we work towards the Government’s target of a 65% reduction in those killed or seriously injured by 2035.
Around 24% of fatal or serious injury collisions in Britain involve 17 to 24-year-olds, so getting this right would save lives and make a major contribution towards meeting those targets.
Insurance costs are high because crash risk is high among this vulnerable group - a reality that underlines the need for meaningful, long-term solutions to safeguard young drivers.
The event reinforced that there is no single answer. Progress will require collaboration, innovation and a willingness to do things differently.
Thank you again to Andy MacNae MP and the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) for making the event happen and to everybody who attended.
