New documentary shares the devastating reality of dangerous driving

A powerful new documentary released by Durham Constabulary is offering a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of dangerous driving, through the story of 18-year-old Abbie Devanney, who was killed on her birthday in October 2023.
The film combines emotional interviews with Abbie's younger sister, Amy, alongside body-worn camera footage from police officers who attended the scene, providing an unflinching insight into the lifelong impact a single crash can have on families, friends and emergency services.
Amy hopes that by sharing her family's experience, other young people will recognise that they are not invincible and think twice before taking risks behind the wheel.
The collision happened on an unlit rural road when the car Abbie was travelling in left the carriageway and struck a tree. Abbie died at the scene and three other teenagers suffered life-changing injuries. The driver, who had passed his test just six months earlier, was later jailed after admitting causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. The court heard he had been travelling at more than 70mph and had a history of dangerous driving behaviour.
The documentary also highlights the wider issue of young driver risk. Durham Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen says Abbie's death demonstrates why stronger measures are needed to better protect newly qualified drivers, including the introduction of a Graduated Driving Licensing (GDL) system.
While this is a difficult watch, documentaries such as this play an important role in educating young drivers, their parents and everyone who influences them. We are grateful to Abbie's family for their bravery in helping others understand the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and the importance of making safer choices every time we get behind the wheel.
