A bereaved mum whose teenage son was killed in a road crash has opened a new bakery, helping ensure his memory continues to support young people in the community.

Crystal Owen has opened Crystal’s Shine On Bakery in Shrewsbury following the loss of her 17-year-old son, Harvey (pictured above), who died in a road crash in 2023.

Harvey was killed alongside three friends when the car they were travelling in left a rural road near Garreg, Gwynedd, while they were on a camping trip.

Crystal, who also runs a cupcake business in the town, said the support from customers since opening the new shop has been overwhelming. She said:

“We’re absolutely blown away by the support. The customers have been so lovely - we’ve had cards and flowers. It’s been really overwhelming.”

The Shrewsbury town centre bakery offers cakes and sandwiches and operates as a smaller takeaway-style version of her existing business.

Crystal has also introduced a “pay it forward” scheme, allowing customers to buy a coffee or cake for someone in need - something inspired by Harvey’s kindness.

The bakery will also help support Shine On with Harvey Owen, a charity set up in Harvey’s memory to help disadvantaged young people access music and creative activities and build confidence.
